In case you’re wondering, yes those are all cell phones. They are the work of new media artist Rob Petit, who first began experimenting with mobile phones as an art medium a year to two ago. Since then he has gone on to make some visually stunning pictures by literally just piling up lots of cell phones on top of each other. Now I know that the term “Art” is a horribly loaded one, and these days you have all kinds of weirdos claiming to be artists, especially in art-starved Singapore where we practically welcome anyone as an artists. Still, just looking through his only gallery, it is difficult to not be moved by some of Rob’s works, a characteristic (dare I say) of somethign that is truly artistic.

Take the above picture for example. The cynic can just dryly point out that “hey guys, it’s just a pile of old phones for crying out loud!” But look closer, and you can just sort of draw away some emotions away from the picture. First in the center you have the illuminated, but no longer working sets of cell phones. They are almost in a sort of a halo of light, a kind of weird version of religious paintings of gods and angels. The phrase Deus Ex Machina (god from the machine) almost immediately comes to mind. Just like how the Renaissance celebrated the beauty of man, these days we celebrate the beauty of tech.

Then as the eye travels out wards, into the darkened areas of the boarder, there is almost a sense of dread. Doesn’t it remind you (somewhat eerily) of the sentinel robots from the Matrix? That idea of some kind of evil machine sentience? All the little screens gleaming every so slightly in the darkness. It is almost as if the whole picture were a statement on technology itself - the glory and beauty of it all, but every framed by hidden dangers that we would be well aware of.

The rest of Rob Petit’s work can be viewed at his site.

So just the other day, I was having lunch with a friend when he suddenly turns to me, and breathlessly revealed “next week I’m getting an iPhone!” Unfortunately for him, his eager, earnest excitement crashed right into my nonchalance. And yet again, this particular friend found himself annoyed that I was sharing in his barely-kept-in-checked [...]

I’m sure we’ve all been here before. Someone whom you can’t stand, but sadly have to live with (your boss, annoying group members and classmates, or your slightly senile mother) has just called. Of course, you’re no mood to bother listening to whatever nonsense they have to tell you. So the question is, how do [...]

Just the other day I saw two primary school boys playing some sort of blue tooth game on their iPhones. This is probably going to make me sound unnecessarily old, but really I couldn’t help but envy the kind of affluence kids have these days. I mean, when I got my first hand phone (a [...]

So I know I’ve been a little late on the entries for a bit, but for once I’m going to be hopelessly unapologetic. Because there’s one big word on my, and indeed everyone’s lips, and it just might be taking up every waking moment. Naturally it starts with an O, and ends with a C. [...]

So every time around this year, I get just a little gloomy. While the SAF and other performers do their thing in the national day parade,  I find myself cooped up at home wondering how this little island, with all it’s little quirks and odd ends, is going to do for the next year. On [...]

Imagine a phone that looks and could function like a normal pen?

I was doing my regular readings online when I stumbled upon this website through links. Meet Nokia 9900, a concept phone model that was done by this guy.

Initially, I thought it was for real because I didn’t notice the text “concept phone” at all. [...]

“The Curse of the BlackBerry” was on my Gmail news while I was checking my email the other day. As curious as a cat, I clicked on the link even though I kind of know what curse it is after numerous scenes that I’ve seen on TV and movies.
A classic example would be a long-awaited [...]

I was checking out the Navigator phone last week and to my surprise, I didn’t manage to open the back cover of the phone as easily as I thought. After some initial attempts, I struggled vigoriously and finally, I pried open the casing like an amatuer opening a durian.
*cue for applause*
Anyway,  I dig the back [...]

These days, I had to wake up as early as 6a.m. for work assignments and appointment. Any waking timing that is ranging from 5.30a.m. to 7a.m. is considered a torture for me. But I’m not complaining cos’ holding different jobs means that I have to adapt to different work natures. In times like that, even [...]
