After the recent episode of good Samaritans who returned my lost laptop, I thought of writing this blog entry on security measures on your mobile phones since it is the most commonly lost / stolen compared to bigger items.
1. The most basic method is to get the international mobile equipment identity (usually known as IMEI) number of your mobile phone. It’s the phone equivalent of our NRIC number.
- Key in *#06# on your mobile phone to check for its (IMEI) number. A fifteen-digit code will appear on the screen. And it is the unique serial number of your mobile phone. Jot it down somewhere so that you can remember it. If you lost your mobile phone or it got stolen, make a police report and provide the IMEI number.
side note: Correct me if I’m wrong, Singapore’s phone service providers don’t provide insurance to your phone, so don’t bother calling up your service provider to report about the lost phone.
2. Get anti-theft softwares like Bak2U to track down the thief who stolen you phone.

This software is popular amongst tech-savvy users but I think that anyone would find this extremely useful to track down their stolen/lost phones and the culprit.

3. If you lost it at any public transport (e.g. taxi, bus), call up their lost & found department to report on your lost item and provide them with details like your phone model, which bus / taxi you took, time when it took place, and etc. Call 100 to get the numbers that you need to know.
4. Check out online forums on lost & found items. (Well, I personally don’t do this but there are some people who tried this method: http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/showthread.php?t=1908925)
5. Lastly, if you don’t do the above, you just need to pray that your item is picked up by a good Samaritan.
Good luck!

There’s a website http://www.RewardingReturn.com
They sell recovery labels for a couple bucks. You put one on your phone, and if you ever lose it, they’ll ship it back for free if someone reports it found. And why would anyone report a lost iPhone found? B/c on the label it says “REWARD IF RETURNED”
I’ve already lost my iPhone twice now, and I’ve gotten it back both times. This website is a real life saver
