DVD Quality on Nokia

December 25, 2007

The entertainment value of a mobile device is determined by its capacity to support music, video and gaming functionalities. In recent years, we have seen how a mobile device has evolved into more than what it is, almost into what computers have become.

Having DVD quality movies on your mobile can be achieved, and we’ll make it as simple as ABC for you in our detailed guide for the transition from your DVD, into an MP4 file format for your Nokia device.

Freeware software that provides such conversion are aplenty, and our recommendation is for Video-LAN, located at http://www.videolan.org/vlc/.

Choose the installer that fits your operating system, and we’ll start on the conversion process.

Insert the DVD of your choice into your DVD drive, and click on Open Disc.

Choose the DVD radio box, check that the Stream/Save checkbox is ticked, and click on the Settings button beside it.

Next, specify the output file’s location, and the extension to be used. Note that .MP4 is one of the common acceptable formats, and ensure the checkbox for MP4 under Encapsulation Method is clicked, as highlighted here.

Moving onto your Transcoding Options, click on the Video Codec checkbox, select mp4v and a bitrate of 1024kb/s. Next, check the Audio Codec checkbox, and select mp4a and a bitrate of 128kb/s.

After which, it’s time to resize your video to the correct resolution size for your Nokia device. Notice on the top of the Settings menu, you’ll see a string of input under the Target field. Locate the specific area with “scale=1″ as illustrated here:

After which, replace that command with the following input: width=640 height=480 Your final Target field should look like this:

The second last step is to click Ok, and click Ok once more, and your DVD would be encoded to the target destination. Do note that if you wish to have a smaller file size, all you need to do is reduce the mp4v and mp4a bitrates, though you might require some trial and error to find the optimized settings for your specific device.

Following which, transfer the file to your Nokia device, under My Videos, and head on over to the Video Centre to view your latest DVDs right on your Nokia mobile device!
