Price
First ask, what are you comfortable spending? If cost is a factor, there are quite a few $0 dollar phones available which get the job done, still providing MMS, SMS and other imaging services.
The added dollars most of the time is used to pay for, exclusivity, style, technology, status and brand. If you’re not willing to pay for it, the answer is quite simple, go for a phone which you either pay very little or none at all.
At this stage you can wait for a good handset to go on offer. In our competitive market most telcos will offer good discounts on some more typical models, I know the Nokia E65 sold for about $70 with a normal contract, that’s a really good deal for a S60 enabled handset (of course it looked good too).
Technology chasers would like to get their hands on the newer handsets which feature state of the art functions like high speed packet services, touch screens, status screens, high megapixel camera with geo tagging. Price is less a determining factor and most are willing to pay for this technology.
(Latest HTC Dream running Google Android)
Bottom line is quite simple, what is your sweet point? Are you willing to pay for looks and/or technology?
(HTC Diamond for the technology chasers)
(Apple iPhone, for those loving the look and fluid interface)
