There was once when I was going for a presentation meeting and was rushing, the Nokia E71 brought about great convenience as I could run through my presentation for a last time to get myself prepared while on my way.

Accessing intranet files is now made possible and it definitely helped me a lot whenever I wanted to access files stored in my intranet. A great business solution together with the Office Suite has made the Nokia E71 a powerful, handy and mobile workstation that allows work to be done almost anytime, anywhere.

GPS makes my life easier whenever I’m on the road, which I believe business users would find very handy. It takes me to the places I want to go and the maps are quite easy to read (I’m really bad when it comes to map reading).

The Nokia E71 comes with QuickOffice, which allows me to open standard MS Office documents. The QWERTY keypad and the landscape display are more natural for this type of work. This is one area where the smaller display screen is an obvious disadvantage: the fonts are smaller and working with a smaller screen is more tiring. The calendar also makes use of the screen real estate to display more information: I can display a monthly calendar and have the daily schedule displayed beside the calendar. This is definitely a plus for PIM functions.

As a senior web developer and owner of an online call centre community in the Philippines, the Nokia E71 allowed me to go online and keep track of my statistics and traffic while on the move. The fast loading time is worthy of mentioning. I was also impressed with the card reader application that comes built-in with the Nokia E71. It allowed me to capture the contents of a business card using the phone camera and through Optical Character Recognition (OCR), it automatically read the text and allowed me to save the information directly to my phone contacts. The MSN messenger that runs inside the new Nokia E71 allowed me to go online anytime and chat with colleagues and friends.

Apart from keeping me connected for the whole week, the phone allowed me to do a whole Powerpoint presentation and work out a budget spreadsheet without a laptop. It was a little sketchy doing both on the phone (especially for a first-timer), but the result was good enough for me to have confidence that I can do it again and anytime on the Nokia E71.

It enables you to view and edit documents using QuickOffice. This enables work to be done anytime and anywhere with ease. Furthermore, there is security to protect corporate information when you log on to your company’s intranet. It would be better if the phone memory would be bigger than it currently is.

One cool feature found on the E71 is the ability to switch between 2 customisable modes for your device. I used it to set one mode as my ‘office’ mode to come with all my work-related shortcuts/emails/apps/theme and conveniently switch it to my ‘leisure’ mode showing all the other fun stuff when I’m out of the office. Pretty neat, yah~? Security features are great too; with onboard data encryption, remote locking (which can be done easily just by sending an SMS to the device with a preset remote lock message) etc, I do not need to worry if I misplace my device again. Not forgetting it comes with the full suite of connectivity options available as well as a reasonably long battery life (approx. 3 days worth of heavy usage) to aid my work (and leisure!) on the move.

Reason no.6: The responsive processor coupled with its integrated productivity suite and tweaked versions of Contacts and Calendar offer robust corporate functionality.

Reason no.7: HSDPA (3.5G) data supports essential connectivity, particularly the native Nokia VoIP feature which is an integral part of my business telecommunications. Throw AgileMessenger into the mix and it’s my definitive communications platform for staying in touch with the world.

The E71 software suite amazed and delighted me with a variety of useful applications. With QuickOffice, I was able to open up email attachments for quick reviews before making decisions, all while I was on the move. The included Zip functionality allows for unzipping e-mail attachments without using a computer. The Search feature is pretty useful when looking for applications or files within the mobile phone with just the use of a search phrase. The built-in Encryption feature allows for encryption of data inside the phone memory and/or MicroSD card – safeguarding my confidential data in the event that I lose my phone. All of these give credence to this truly business-oriented phone.

Even fairly large Word, Excel and Powerpoint files were handled easily by the QuickOffice suite which also permitted new files to be prepared on the device itself. Applications were also provided for zipping files, reading PDFs and encrypting sensitive information. Serious business users will be pleased by the extensive range of connectivity options: Wi-Fi, HSDPA, IR and Bluetooth.

At the core of its appeal is the onboard Wi-fi and QuickOffice. When experienced with the QWERTY keyboard as a whole, it quickly became clear who the E71 is targeting. But even so, there was no stopping me from warming up to its proposition of being a digital office on the go. I may be more interested in the multimedia functions, but with the Nokia E71, I’m pretty convinced that business phones are no longer boring and irrelevant gadgets for my lifestyle.

I have managed to read a few PDF and Word documents using the business functions and almost everything is fine, but I don’t like the scroll and zoom functions. While scrolling, sometimes the cursor tends to miss a line which I was unable to select/click. The zoom function is limited to only a few choices and it’s a hassle to go to the options every time I need to zoom in or out.

Since the device is mainly made for executives, it comes with a handy arsenal of functions, such as encryption for the device & MicroSD card and VPN support, just to name a few. The Office application is simple to use, with editing features available even though it is limited to basic functions. You would still be better off using the computer to do editing, but it’s handy for mobile use.

Opening Microsoft documents on the Nokia E71 was easy, whether to edit or simply just for viewing. I had was pleasantly surprised that it could even be used as a wireless presenter for Powerpoint slides with its nifty little program. What impressed me the most was that it could even be used as a modem for my mobile broadband, connecting my PC to the internet with only a click of a button using PC Suite and the data cable provided.

Perhaps as a last note as well, our IT administrator (as soon as he found out I had a unit) wanted to test it on our network (VPN and all). Alas, time was short, but sweet definitely. I’m sure he would have had enjoyed a test drive on his side.

The Nokia E71 comes with some basic business connectivity – basic e-mail (POP3/IMAP), Mail for Exchange, Blackberry Connect. To top it off, the VPN support allows one to connect back to the office network to retrieve office documents to read on QuickOffice.

I utilised this feature of the Nokia E71 the most during my trial period. I simply adored the Organiser and the QWERTY keypad. The ergonomics of QWERTY makes it possible to compose rather long-winded documents while on bus. The ability to scan namecards directly into my phone contacts would be a powerful networking tool in any social gathering or corporate event. However, like all optical technologies, the data is sometimes garbled, but I feel it is a step in the right direction. Unfortunately, my one grievance was with the productivity software. I found the Symbian Office suite to be somewhat inferior to the Office Mobile suite provided by most Windows Mobile 6 PDAs.

The business use aspect of the Nokia E71 is somewhat confusing to me. The business card reader function, which needed a program download, is a very good feature. Now to the confusing part, how do you use the barcode scanner function of this phone? I wasn’t able to capture anything because there wasn’t a ‘capture’ function in its options, so how is this considered useful? This is something Nokia really has to address, maybe with a software update.

The wide screen does help a lot while going online on web pages, and going through documents and e-mails. While the screen shape and resolution made it easy to read and
the QWERTY keypad made it easy to type normal text, trying to squeeze that many things into the screen makes it very difficult for any user who has problems reading
    small print.

Firstly, I must commend Nokia on their innovative business card reading function; it definitely made storing contacts a lot easier, albeit with a bit of tweaking as some information needed to be re-typed. The Symbian office suite, Quick Office, really allowed me to take my work with me when I travelled around and thus, saved me a lot of time and unnecessary effort of carrying a laptop around. I was even able to give a PowerPoint presentation to a client with my mobile phone. Ingenious! Also, the Calendar function let me schedule meetings very effectively, with my day’s schedule and appointments displayed right beside a monthly calendar for easy reference.
