In addition to e-mail & personal information management, the Nokia E71 supports the latest OVI services including maps, music & media sharing that you expect. This includes fast & seamless browsing with HSDPA, WiFi & 3G connectivity, A-GPS & Nokia Maps for navigation, a music player with support for up to 8GB expandable memory & a 3.2-megapixel autofocus camera.

The GPS function is so convenient and it brings me to my destination without much difficulty. The 3.2-megapixel camera is sharp and clear with its additional auto-focus.

It was pure joy not missing any fun with the entertainment provided by the Nokia E71. Snapping pictures on the go, listening to my favorite music together with the Personal Workout programme switched on that utilised the GPS to track my distance and pace, and a game or two of solitaire were just some of the many great features that make the Nokia E71 the almost perfect all-rounder.

It’s not bad for a 3.2 megapixel camera and I have no complaints for the WiFi and 3G connectivity. They all work fine for me.

The entertainment suite that comes with the phone is functional and allows me to watch videos, listen to music and radio, surf the net through Wi-Fi or via the 3.5G network without much hassle. In terms of sound quality, I find the sound from the provided earphones overly harsh. Perhaps other reviewers online can identify whether the problem comes from the provided earphones or are inherent from the phone. While the phone does not come with any games, I can easily download Symbian games from the internet. Compared with the Nokia E61/E61i, the faster processor and larger RAM that comes with the Nokia E71 allows me to play games previously unplayable on Nokia E61/E61i. I am not impressed by the GPS and Nokia Maps: it took over a minute to triangulate my position and the map is not updated enough to show the streets leading to my destination. The 3.2-megapixel camera is disappointing. The photos taken by it come with a bluish tinge, while the videos suffer from poor framerates (22 frames per second). I hope Nokia can solve the white balance problem with a firmware update; the latter is probably constrained by the memory bandwidth design.

The Nokia E71’s podcasting feature allowed me to unobtrusively download podcasts through my Wi-Fi while at home and listen to the streams later on while on the move. As expected of a business phone, the picture quality of the Nokia E71 is not as impressive as the other phones.

While away from city life for about a week, the Nokia E71 was a welcome refuge. I clocked in some miles on the web browser, the radio, the MP3 player, and even more on a game I installed on the Nokia E71. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same about the camera, which came across like a compromise without a working auto-focus function.

It has built in A-GPS and Nokia Maps to navigate your routes. It also supports the popular instant messaging Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo! Messenger; this enabled me to communicate with my friends even on the go with the built-in Wi-Fi. The music player can support a relatively big memory and the sound effects are good too.

With a big viewing screen of 2.36 inches, 320×240 display, web surfing and mobile gaming is much more bearable on the E71. Although positioned as an E-series business-centric device, the imaging quality isn’t too shoddy at all. Images taken look sharp and crisp, even when viewed in full screen mode with reasonably good colour rendition. However I noticed that images taken in low-light conditions come with a slight purplish tinge, which I believe can be sorted out with some setting tweaks. I’m no fan of its flash photography though, as I find that the flash is a little too harsh for my liking. Another nifty feature I discovered on the E71 is the ‘Active Notes’ function, where you can now link your phone contacts with ‘sticky notes’. No more forgetting to run errands for my dearest when she calls me again!

Reason no. 4: The updated video (H.264, Flash Video) and audio (DRM WMA) codec support, together with its superb screen, extends its capabilities as a mobile entertainment platform, a salvation to road warriors.
Reason no.5: Nokia Maps has always been a joy and an excellent tool whilst on location in foreign cities, it is easy to develop a dependency for the City Maps and Real‐Time Navigation features for both my personal and professional usage.

With wireless connectivity options such as HSDPA and WLAN, I was able to go online anywhere with the E71. With additional software, there are a myriad of possibilities available for entertainment purposes, such as using Windows Live Messenger to chat with friends. The phone supports playback of video formats such as 3GP, RealVideo and MPEG4. There is also support for H.264, but the playback for videos encoded using this codec was quite jerky. In addition, there is A2DP support, which I used to pair with my stereo Bluetooth headset for listening to music. The inbuilt 3.2 megapixel camera is pretty useful, but photos taken at night were rather disappointing, but at the same time were kind of expected as I did not expect a business phone like the E71 to have a top-grade camera.

The bright screen displayed and zoomed high resolution photos very well. Supported video files played well as did streams from YouTube, etc. MP3 playback was standard, but sounded better through the earphones than the ‘tinny’ built-in speakers. The camera’s auto-focusing sometimes needed a little manual help via the press of a key. On first use, the GPS took quite a while to obtain good satellite locks, but was subsequently impressively faster than the Garmin unit in my car. The map was detailed and the audio clear, but route setting appeared to require more effort.

Being a business phone, it wouldn’t be surprising if E71 lacks entertainment qualities since that’s not its sole focus. But much to my surprise, the phone tackled photos, videos and music files brilliantly. Video playback on the pin-sharp LCD screen was smooth and it was so for photo slideshows as well. Pictures snapped with the integrated 3.2-megapixel camera were captured quickly and the preview function was quick to load my shots. However, given the array of camera functions it has, the pictures turned out grainy on preview, which is disappointing. All in all, the camera is what I would have liked to be improved upon.

The Nokia E71 supports a host of multimedia features. The built-in music player supports the popular MP3, WMA, and MP4, together with several others. It also supports Flash which allows you to view YouTube videos. Other powerful features include 3.5G connectivity, A-GPS, Wi-Fi, a functional 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera, 110MB of built-in memory and a microSD slot which can accept up to 8GB cards.

Listening to music via the headset is okay, but when I used the speakers, it’s quite hollow and sometimes gave a crackling sound. Same thing whenever I pressed the scroll buttons. I am not sure if it’s something to do with my set or whether it’s across the board. I did try to play a video, but the quality is not so desirable. A bigger screen would be better. But of course, a bigger screen also means a bigger phone, unless the keypad can be designed to slide out to minimize its overall dimensions.

The device comes with a good list of multimedia solutions such as a built-in radio, music player and a video player, but do not expect much from it since it’s not designed for entertainment. Still, it does get the job done as well. More format support is hoped for.

The 3 megapixel auto-focus camera is quite standard. I do not have the habit of reading manuals, but for the E71, I had to before I could figure out how to use the auto-focus feature. Due to the screen orientation, one need not turn the camera sideway to take pictures.

It fulfilled my every mobile entertainment whim, from playing my MP4 videos & music to my surfing needs. I love the fact that it could view flash videos on Youtube, on the go! And online messenger chat everywhere I go with my mobile broadband access. Even playing games! It has a great graphic display for a mobile device.

External speaker was crisp and clear despite its small size. Music lacked deep resonance for bass, but the overall balance was still good and calls via speakerphone were very clear. The built-in music player was easy to navigate through. The 3.2-megapixel camera was good enough to take clear photos even indoors without requiring the LED flash to trigger.

With the lack of a dedicated processor for graphics, entertainment features weren’t as splendid as the Nokia N95 8GB. Videos stuttered at high bitrates while the Nokia N95 8GB played it effortlessly.

I still feel that this is not the Nokia E71’s forte. The picture quality is not very good & its software suite is better geared for work rather than play. There is a built-in music player which comers in handy should your iPod batteries die whilst in mid-commute and the flash-player is handy when watching FLV movies while on public transport. I was also impressed by the quick transfer of large media files between the Nokia E71 & my PC. A similar transfer to my HTC would have taken eons to complete.

Great sound, great music; as a music player, the Nokia E71 has really rocked my world. Great ease while browsing the internet with its internet connection. The fast connections that this device was able to tap into simply are a notch above the rest. I was able to watch YouTube on the Nokia E71 with ease; no worries of lagging while viewing my favourite clips, reliving certain moments of sporting events!

The high LCD resolution and shape of the screen are the main reasons that everything looks so cool. The speed of the processor also ensures quick loading time and response between applications. It feels like having a PS3 the size of my palm. The light sensor that tunes the LCD brightness was also helpful. The camera captures excellent photo quality and I can’t stop taking pictures with it.

Streaming videos from YouTube was a cinch with the Nokia E71’s ability to support Flash, WMA and MP4, as well as its 3G and WiFi connectivity which allowed for seamless streaming. I could even take cool videos that were at high-resolution for my company lunch. But I’m a music buff, so I zeroed in on the Nokia E71’s MP3 function. With the Nokia E71’s MP3 playing capabilities and expandable memory, which I used both for work and for my collection of songs, I actually went without my MP3 player for the entire week! Couple limitless storage with deep, rich sound quality and it really puts the icing on the Nokia E71 cake.

As expected from a business phone, the 3.2-megapixel camera did not perform well, especially in low light. Its video quality, on the other hand, is still quite acceptable for me. The speakers are loud and clear too, as usual for Nokia. I was disappointed that the phone hangs and auto shuts down when I was waiting for connections to the internet. This did not happen only once.

The Nokia E71 comes with an expandable microSD card slot which comes in handy for storing my music and media. I would prefer it if the headphone jack is 3.5mm, rather than 2.5mm. The 3.2-megapixel camera with autofocus is decent, but not the best I’ve seen, although it’s definitely sufficient for casual trigger-happy users. I’ve tried watching videos from Youtube and the 2.4″ screen looks clear and easy on the eyes.

Nokia Maps, in addition to just being a navigational tool, is actually pretty fun to interact with. Sort of like how people would use Google Earth just to see their house. Plus, it is not necessarily just a big street directory. It is also a great tool to locate the nearest bar, bank or ATM. Definitely a good last minute planner for where to go.

It does almost everything you need: navigation, music, videos and web surfing. But I must say that a 3.5mm jack would be more handy when it comes to providing the needed personal space to listen to your songs.
