Wireless Internet

At just 206 grams, you’ll find the pocket-sized Nokia N800 considerably lighter and portable than the notebook you currently hold dear. Complemented by a 4.13-inch touchscreen LCD, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth without the burden of a heavy battery, you’ll quickly agree that a whole new way of enjoying Internet on the go has arrived.

What I like about the WiFi in N800 is that it is very sensitive in detecting the wireless hotspot. With the WiFi, I can easily access the internet through the Wireless@SG, in church or at work without having to bring a bulky laptop around. N800 is just like a mini laptop to me. It save the configuration which allows auto connects wherever it detects the hotspot connection.

The N800 is equipped with a WLAN 802.1b/g. It automatically connects to the last known wireless network once the device is booted up. Searching for new network was a breeze. Performing scans on the available network in the community centre showed Wireless@SG almost instantly. I frequent some of my favourite forums online, such as HardwareZone and Club CDFreaks and I was able to browse the forums without encountering any hitches. Websites requiring the use of Flash appears and functions well, and obviously, other websites appears well too, except for JAVA enabled websites (Eg. Internet banking, trading of stocks) The ability to open multiple windows is definitely a plus for surfing using Wireless@SG as it requires users to be continuously authenticated and logged in. This could not be done on my smartphones.

The N800 was used extensively at home as well as at the hotspots. Setting up the wireless connections was easy. Display is impressively sharp for web browsing. Reading emails on site like yahoo mail is fine except for some cosmetic problems for pages with frames. The dynamic zoom hardware buttons work flawlessly and screen displays zooms in and out quickly.

For Internet usage, the integrated browser which comes along is enough for you to properly view all web sites. But when it came to online multimedia web site such as DailyMotion and YouTube I couldn’t watch a movie correctly as it was lagging. Sending and receiving file though Bluetooth is easy. One interesting thing I found is that when paring with another device it automatically generates a key for you to use without having to think of one. I found it to be quite useful as each time I tried to send a file to my friends via Bluetooth from my PDA, I always ask myself what would be a secure key.

One thing I like the most is the built-in autofocus camera which I used to video-tele-conferencing Skype with my counterparts. That’s really cool!

There was no problems connecting to the Internet when I first signed on. After some surfing time to see how my favourite pages would appear in this slightly smaller format from what I am used to, I found it bearable. The zoom in functions were useful for bringing topics of interest into readable format. The e-mail features are definitely useful for those on the road moments when you need flexibility with hotel bookings.

I caught a lot of attention with the N800. I was listening to my daily dose of Morning Express on Class 95 with it and surfing the internet reading the daily news and checking my email which is made possible by pairing up with my mobile phone. Web surfing was pretty much enjoyable thanks to her large display as compared to any portable handheld. Even when I am on the move, whenever there is wireless hot spot available, I am able to connect back to my office sip server using gizmo project and remain contactable. Even when there is no connectivity, I can always fall back to my mobile.

With the N800’s Opera and Mozilla beta browsers (that I installed separately), I have been able to surf to all the websites that I visit daily and news ones that I find. I like to surf the web using the N800’s full-screen view. The zoom keys are useful whenever I need to show a portion of the screen to my colleagues or family members, or when I need to do a precise selection.

The WiFi reception on the Nokia N800 is better than I have seen on other WiFi enabled devices, including my notebook at home. This thing can pick up networks further away than my computer can pick up. Connecting to area WiFi networks is also very easy. Networks within range are displayed on the device, and you can pick which one you want to connect to. Once you’ve connected to a network once, it is stored on the tablet and will automatically connect to it if it’s in range in the future, which is nice because you don’t have to type in the access key each time you want to connect to a secured network.

I started surfing at the wireless hotspots with the Wi-Fi, something I haven’t tried before and was impressed with the ease of connectivity and the portability.
