The sound produced by the phone is good and it works well in my car when I connected it to the Ipod aux input of the car stereo system. However, I noted that the volume on the phone has to be put to the max in order to have some decent quality in the sound. Otherwise, the sound produce is rather distance and flat.

With a massive 8GB of internal memory, it is no surprise that Nokia is positioning the phone as a de-facto music player for the user and has equipped it as such. The N81 has a pair of speakers located on either side of the phone and they do sound surprisingly competent. Classical tunes, rock, rap and the usual pop music all came out rather pleasantly with only a slight hint of hiss.

After loading the flash drive with about seven hundred songs, I expected the song list to have some lag. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that scrolling through the song list is a breeze. I can even just type the song I want to find directly in the song list screen and search is almost instantaneous with no lag at all.

As a video player, the Nokia N81 8GB works wonderfully. The display is crisp and sharp. I loaded movies like Tokyo Drift on it and it plays well, without any lag or ghosting. However, one may need to install third party video players instead of using the one that comes with the Nokia N81 as there are no way of scrolling through the full length movie, nor resuming playback from where you stop.
