In all, I would say that the music aspect was the feature that I would prefer and liked the most on the Nokia N81 experience. Given a very comfortable screen size, I would say the Nokia N81 8GB has fulfilled the role of a music phone.

The sound quality was impeccable (helped by my Philips noise-filter earphones). It put to shame MP3 players that promise so much sonically, but deliver so little. Its impressive battery life also meant I could enjoy my music while I’m lost in the city for as long as I want. In fact, it was five full days of non-stop music playing before I had to charge the phone again.

Music playback is relatively enjoyable being relatively crisp and clear, however the quality dropped when you are pushing it at full blast.

The acoustics aspect of this mobile is great as a portable music player as the stereo speakers are located at the top of the phone on the left/right sides, the volume rocker key is situated on the right side below it.

The Nokia N81 8GB has a lot of storage space for media files. It replaced my 2GB iPod during the one week trial, especially with it’s good file manager and ease of navigation. FM is a plus point since both my iPod and PDA phone doesn’t have this feature.

The stereo speakers are loud and clear as compared to most phones and can clearly differentiate the stereo sound. Furthermore, it is using 3.5mm headphone jack, thus one can easily plug in any personal earphone or speaker jack.

Another good thing I like is that while listening, if a call comes in, the playback will automatically pause and resume by fading in once the call ends.

Using the Nokia Music Manager software provided, one can easily rip music from the CDs, automatically convert them to the suitable format and transfer to the phone. With 8GB storage space, plenty of music/songs can be stored in there!

After loading the flash drive with about seven hundred songs, I expected the song list to have some lag. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that scrolling through the song list is a breeze. I can even just type the song I want to find directly in the song list screen and search is almost instantaneous with no lag at all.

As a video player, the Nokia N81 8GB works wonderfully. The display is crisp and sharp. I loaded movies like Tokyo Drift on it and it plays well, without any lag or ghosting. However, one may need to install third party video players instead of using the one that comes with the Nokia N81 as there are no way of scrolling through the full length movie, nor resuming playback from where you stop.

With a massive 8GB of internal memory, it is no surprise that Nokia is positioning the phone as a de-facto music player for the user and has equipped it as such. The N81 has a pair of speakers located on either side of the phone and they do sound surprisingly competent. Classical tunes, rock, rap and the usual pop music all came out rather pleasantly with only a slight hint of hiss.

The sound produced by the phone is good and it works well in my car when I connected it to the Ipod aux input of the car stereo system. However, I noted that the volume on the phone has to be put to the max in order to have some decent quality in the sound. Otherwise, the sound produce is rather distance and flat.

The camera function was quick on start up. The various modes available had improved so much from the previous Nokia phones. Although it was a mere 2 megapixel camera, the photos captured were colourful and easily met my expectation. Switching to video mode was easy, and the friendly interface was easy to use as well.

Transferring music to the phone was easy with the Nokia Music Manager. The song selection process was smooth and music quality was good for a phone. I couldn’t help blasting the songs to the delights of my children who kicked to the beat.

The 3.5mm audio output jack allows me to use my own personal earphone with ease. The phone’s audio quality is superb, even excellent in an enclosed room with the phone blasted at full volume. The stereo speakers are well snuggled on both sides of the phones which simply makes it unnoticeable.

As the Nokia N81 8GB has been labeled as a music/gaming phone, I inevitably have high expectations of its music functions. True enough, this phone definitely did not disappoint me in terms of its music capabilities. The music is loud enough on its external speaker for others to hear.

The great stereo sound is sure to catch the attention of music lovers. Surprisingly, the loudspeaker has the best sound quality, with audible volumes for both music and ringtones. The dual speakers appear to create a mini true surround sound.

I turned on the music player and out came crisp, clear sound from both the stereo speakers. They are so good that I can hear the panning effect of some songs.

I’ve had the enjoyment of playing back some nice videos while on the train to work. So engrossed I’ve become with watching the videos that I’ve almost forgotten that I’m watching out of a mobile phone.

What I like most about the phone is the gallery segment where I can store the music and the video files into one folder. It is easier for me to access it and view as and when I like.

The music feature on the N81 exceeds my expectation with its astonishing stereo speakers and their great sound quality. There’s almost no distortion even when at full volume. I’m truly amazed that they outperform my SE walkman phone.

I like the speakers on both side of the phones which delivers good audio quality to the music played through the phones. This comment is based on the music that is blasted out from a phone. I find those downloaded video that I played on the phone is quite clear in term of both the pictures and sound quality. The video is also quite smooth.

Music was a delight to hear from the Nokia N81 8GB with its the amazingly audible speakers. The sound through the earpiece doesn’t downplay the quality of music heard either.

This is a music lovers’ must get phone! The sound quality (be it radio or mp3) is astounding and you can just sink into the music with it. The 3.5mm jack is nicely placed at the top of the phone so that you can just slip it into your trousers pockets and not have any extra bulges (in the pocket) while tuning into your music.

The music aspect was great. That and the 8GB memory was what triggered my interest in this phone. I am pleased that the sound was comparable to my iPod after setting the appropriate EQ. The phone has rendered my iPod obsolete in the 4 days I had it. Outdoors, the stereo speakers were decent, and the sound quality was clear and loud for such a small device.

Keeping in mind that this is also a music phone, the stereo speakers are big enough and fairly distinguishable. The music player is user-friendly and the music keys on the D-pad make it more convenient in using it as a music player.

The multimedia functions of the phone were good, and I could play my music reliably. The only problem I had was that the music button is too close to the main navigational pad, thus turning on the music player unintentionally for quite a number of times. Otherwise, music playback was good and video quality was fine.

The sound from the inbuilt speakers is loud – music resounds and can be heard rooms away. The 3.5mm jack is definitely a plus point. Nokia certainly made the right move in including this. How many phones with these many features come with a 3.5mm jack these days? This great feature is an asset to audiophiles who prefer their personal earphones/headphones.

Prior to the N81, whenever I’m out to meet a friend, I carry a book with me to while the waiting time away. With the N81, I carry the earpiece instead :) No more page flipping! I just sit back, relax and listen to the songs that I’ve downloaded. At home, I turn the volume up! I must say that the speakers do pack a punch! I can leave the phone in the bedroom and still hear the music from the kitchen.

As an entertainment mobile device, I felt that the N81 live up to its name. I really enjoyed playing my mp3 song from the phone, especially with the built-in speaker. The sound is fantastic; definitely better than the Sony Ericsson K800i my friend is using.
