First thing that strikes you when you first open the box is how massive the screen is. Color is vibrant and the screen can be viewed from any angle, which is nice for landscape video viewing. Nokia N-Gage comes preinstalled, and having the ‘second slider’ allowing you to have the traditional directional pad on the left and game softkeys on the right layout is a nice touch. It’s somewhat ironic, however, that for a technological marvel such as this the biggest improvement over older “entertainment” models from Nokia is the standard 3.5mm headphone jack (also present in the model this phone replaces, the Nokia N95), which together with the 16GB internal memory makes the Nokia N96 an mp3 player proper.

I find that its 2.8″ screen isn’t too small as initially thought. Given enough bitrate/video quality, it is actually quite good for watching movies and TV shows on it. Movie quality is excellent, and I think its due to its built-in video accelerator and QVGA screen capable of displaying 16 million colours. The inclusion of 4 additional touchpad multimedia shortcut buttons and built-in quick stand was a nice touch. Out of those 4 touchpad buttons, 2 of them are used when playing Nokia N-Gage. However, the two-way sliding mechanism might take some time to get used to.

Watching videos while on my 30-minute train rides was a pleasant experience on its sharp 2.8 inch screen. I especially enjoyed the ability to TV-out so that I can continue to watch my favorite anime at home on the big screen without any visible image quality loss. My only complaint is that the Nokia Video Manager was not able to convert my video files to the supported formats. I ended up using a freeware program to do the conversion I could play videos on the phone.
