I have been a PocketPC user since 2006 and was considering switching to Symbian phones if the Nokia N96 impressed me enough. Sadly, it did not.

The Nokia N96 is surprisingly light for a phone this size. However, I’ve got friends who commented that the phone is quite plastic. As I have been using PPC phones for over 2 years, my review on the phone will be based very much on comparing the usability of the phone compared to my old PPC phone.

The Nokia N96 runs on the Symbian OS and is quite laggy. It takes about one second before the phone responds to pressing an application. In theory, Symbian phones should run faster than PPC phones. However, the Nokia N96 ‘hung’ twice in one day, both times when there was a call coming in. There was no ringing tone or vibration when the call was coming in. None of the buttons would work. The only thing I could do was to remove the battery to ‘reset’ the phone.

The phone signal strength is relatively weak. I can get a stronger signal on my EOL PPC phone! The battery life is also relatively low. On average, it can only last about 1.5 days. That’s worse than my PPC phone. My PPC phone with the same usage will last me 2 days at least!

There is a ‘Power Saving Mode’ which took me over 2 days to figure out how to turn off. There is also nothing on this ‘Power Saving Mode’ in the manual! The manual is also not informative enough. Whatever was put into the manual is quite useless.

The Nokia N96 has an overly glossy plastic outlook and looks like a touch phone with its wide screen. It is bulky and doesn’t really feel comfortable in the palm (well, if you are a lady that is!)

I feel that it hasn’t moved on enough from the Nokia N95 8GB, though it is a good step forward with many applications available, making it a full-featured mobile phone. I personally like the navi-wheel function. Battery life is still very short but with better power management it could last a lot longer. The Nokia N96 does not crash or hang as much as Nokia N95. Internal storage space is huge, plus there’s a micro SD slot in case you run out. It will take years to fill up that space!

The Nokia N96 is a great phone to have if you’re looking for an all-in-one multimedia gadget. If you’re not too fussy, you can leave your digital cameras, MP3 players and handheld gaming consoles at home, saving you valuable bag space. The Nokia N96 can perform these multimedia tasks quite adequately and keep you entertained. The build quality of the phone, however, is appalling. It looks like a cheap plastic toy phone. The sliding mechanism feels stiff and unnatural, though that may improve with seasoning. Ladies will also loathe the bulkiness and weight. Overall, the aesthetics and build of the phone leave much to be desired. The OS tended to lag at times but not to an unbearable extent.
