It would be of no surprise if told that the good folks at Nokia were looking to create the multimedia equivalent of a Swiss Army knife when they designed the Nokia N96. Being as feature-rich as it is, one could say they struck gold. Unfortunately, little in this world comes without compromise, and this is no exception. The build quality wouldn’t do justice to the Swiss flag, and its hefty size doesn’t go unnoticed in one’s pocket. But perhaps we’re going about this the wrong way. If we consider the Nokia N96 an entertainment device first, and a phone second, then suddenly everything falls into place, and we find ourselves with on-the-go entertainment nirvana packed into a palm-sized box.

I adore the streamlined design and curved edges. Using the Nokia N96 was a pleasant experience because of the smooth shiny surface, well-built slider hinge and details like touch pad navigation. The phone is of a good size and weight, and feels comfortable to hold. Being an avid fan of photography and videography, I was happy to know that I could fit an 8 GB memory card on top of the 16 GB built-in memory for a total storage capacity of 24 GB. Its many functions means I can travel lighter, without bringing so many electronic gadgets. I certainly hope I’m the lucky winner to receive this great phone, and just in time for my birthday too.

Unfortunately, the S60 problem of having to press the button 2 times to send out an SMS was still there. This is very annoying. It would be more convenient if I could simply press 1 button to send the SMS.
I feel that the Nokia N96 would have done much better with a touch screen, especially since Nokia’s competitors are all releasing touch screen phones. It’s a shame that Nokia did not make the Nokia N96 their first S60 touch screen phone.
The OS feels sluggish and is not very responsive. It also tends to reset randomly.
