Yesterday before proceeding to Jurong East for We Sing Our Songs, managed to catch Angels and Demons at Iluma. Guess what I saw at Filmgarde, Hall 5, Row D?

This pair of lovers were treating the cinema like their home, the guy was resting his bare feet on top of the seat in front (ie Row C) while the lady positioned her feet flatly at the back of the seats (imagine someone trying to use the legs to push a heavy object, get the picture?).

They may see each other as angels, but to me they were definitely the demons of the cinema.

I enjoyed myself and I believe those who were there had enjoyed themselves too.  Listening to familiar songs, singing along with it, not to mention eating hot steamy DTF’s xiao long bao under the night sky. What an experience!

At the end of the show, Mr Sim went up on stage to give a brief intro of the latest product. Think my parents would be interested in the content of it.

Haha, it’s just a make believe kopitiam for a tv serial in a real world shop along kim keat road.

Two things that I don’t quite like at the branch I visited:

First there was only one guy manning the reception counter when my friends and I were there and he was on the phone. No nod, no acknowledgement that we were there. Basically we were ignored until someone came out from somewhere else.

Second, the staff there just walked into the room without warning, they just walked in as if there were no doors – walk in to serve the drinks (which took ages until my friend went to check), walk in to ask for payment…

For this I would say the K-boxes I visited were much better, as they do acknowledged your presence even when they were on the phone at the counter, they knocked, sometimes even apologized and made you feel more at ease when a stranger budged in when singing.

Then came the one at Bugis Illuma. Great! Definitely much more convenient for me. So far went there twice already.

As the building had yet to be officially launched, the place was quite quiet.

Ok back to their tea, refreshing, colourful, I like it. Interesting names too.

Their cakes… limited choices but the wild jackfruit cake was definitely my favourite.

First time I went there in the afternoon, there were still quite a number of cakes available. Second time I went, around the same time, but only limited slices of cakes only. A while later saw someone delivered and replenished the cakes.

Good business or left over cake from yesterday?

I sincerely hope it’s the first scenario.

I managed to get many pictures as it “voluntarily” stood/sat down there chirping away while the parents would flew by once a while to check the baby out.

The funny thing happened near the end when the parents wanted the kid to go home I presumed, but you know how kids are, the baby bird just refused to budge until the parents had to drag and pull the baby bird’s wing.

I like it a lot, the songs, the stage…. But tickets to all remaining shows were sold out by then thus even if I wanted to watch it again, I can’t.

Anyway bought the soundtrack CD and been listening to it since, can’t get enough of the songs. However still can’t beat them singing during the show as those in the CD too rigid (can’t find a better word).

For me the most memorable scene would be when Rose and Ah Qiang met at the airport… that song where it ended with Rose entering the departure gate “another sweet song another heart breaking story…”

Time on internet was greatly reduced except for my daily dosage of ST e-paper and weekly HEROES. So that’s how I’ve survived through April.

first week of April - fell sick, took 2 MCs within a week. Don’t understand why doctors do not want to give out MC even though a person is already genuine sick, I got to ask “can I have MC…”

First time I saw the doctor, I had a bad sore throat and coughing due to the throat irritation.

3 days later second time, I totally lost my voice, running nose and coughing and yet I still had to ask for MC.

Apparently only when one is having fever then MC is automatically given… what a rule.

These are simply drawing software that you can just draw on the touchscreen, using the stylus or finger.

If you let me choose, I prefer Paint Pad for having more color choices (48 colors compared to 16 in mobile paint) and other features such as bigger canvas, text input, spray paint, opening of file… but the biggest turn off of this programme is it’s inability to save because saving is only allowed for HK nokia phone.

The advantage for mobile paint would be its ability to give you a full blank canvas while drawing.

 So far the only “interesting” new features in the new 5800 firmware would be burst mode and front camera able to take photos. The it strikes me… the current nokia 5800 can do that already… According to gsmarena, the new firmware features the following: 

-          Faster user interface and faster download times

- New camcorder features: second camera support for still image capture in addition to video calls, burst mode that allows people to take multiple pictures one after another without needing to repress the picture taking button

- Mobile Dictionary: built-in dictionary functionality with voice playback of words utilizing text-to-speech technology, support for 38 languages

- Application Update: with Application Update people can check for available updates for applications and update them directly in the device. Applications can also be kept up-to-date by setting the checking to automatic.

anyway, getting news about latest firmware being available can be exciting especially when the phone came with lotsa bugs or the new firmware promises lotsa new features. agree?

I’m more of a mandarin pop, English oldies and easy listening genre guy, so I was pleasantly surprised that I can find the songs that I like example Shun Zi’s 写一首歌 (it’s in wma format though).

Browsing through the music store on the phone was not a friendly thing to do but if you know the songs you want, you can do a search.  Now I’m going to download some Carpenters’ songs.

Took time off to take the train to JB - Danga City Mall with a few of my friends. Actually there’s nothing much there, quite a number of shops were closed. The management made full use of those empty shops to showcase some art exhibition.

Anyway, went to Aeon Tebrau City and spent most of our time there. Nothing much to do except eat and eat. My favourite must be the Secret Recipe there due to the price.

Though it’s a weekday but managed to spot quite a number cars from Singapore and one thing I noticed was quite a number was still having the triangle plate.

Everything went on smoothly and as planned except when we were waiting for the train to bring us home, we were told there was a delay for … 1 hour.

Nevertheless, it was a good experience as I learnt a number of things (eg. no custom chop when taking train, the Watson there is cheaper than the Watson here…)

Guess such phones are not just being sold in Sim Lim anymore and they’re getting more prominent exposure in those big exhibitions like IT show.

Recently one friend of mine had been seriously thinking of buying one of these “clonies”. Yes, she was most impressed by their features and not to mention the prices too. But all I told her was to think twice. $100 is still money and though I was also impressed with the many features, I’m not so sure of the quality and safety, not to mention the design was a total rip off from the various main stream phones.

But honestly, the price for many products was indeed very attractive.

Though it’s not any of the nokia N-series or E-series but that doesn’t mean this phone is lacking in the features. For me it’s the touch screen that interest me and after using it, the phone does not disappoint. No physical keypad is not a problem as there are various input method and I find myself typing sms faster than before.

After much reading, I have decided that my next phone should be touch screen. Shortlisted phones are HTC touch HD, SE Xperia 1 and finally the N97. For now N97 is high up on the phone to get because I’ve used the nokia 5800 and I like it!

Also:

i) been using N95 and had been “addicted” to the variety of the programs available, not to mention the $$$ spent too. So it is natural that I should try to make full use of these softwares.

ii) big big screen.

So let’s just wait till the phone is out then when the price is stable, off I go, or maybe just maybe I will change my plan again.

The trip was fun, back to basic (though not necessarily that basic because I’ve been spending quite some time online using nokia tube).

 Haha, so learning in progress…

Great news and it is like finally, took them so long. Currently I have many phone chargers but out of the many, there are only 2 brands and 3 designs – SE old port one, SE fast port, Nokia charger. At work, I have heard colleagues asking anyone having x brand charger? So a universal charger is definitely good news.

But then, this will be a reality only in 2012.

Also took a few videos of those busy bees. Previously the bees shot I had were taken using SE k800i, default mode and the bestpic mode, but after switching to n95 8gb, can’t seem to get one as good.

However last year, I’ve travelled to three countries and somehow I began to see the beauty of travelling (minus the time on the plane). Now my mind been wandering, under so much work related stress, wandering and wondering which countries should I visit?

I mean sincere feedback, not those kpkb type.

Personally I felt it would be good for any company to acknowledge that they have received the feedback and better still if they can follow up with the customer.

My most memorable feedback was one few years back to SBS transit.

I received a computer generated acknowledgement mail and the usual “we will get back to you within xx”.

6 months later I finally received their reply. Better late than never right?

Recently, feedback to a famous florist (?) about their QC for an online order (that can be another post for me J ), so far no news no reply no computer generated mail too.

For my parents, the must have ingredient for steamboat is the garland chrysanthemum (or commonly known as tang o), if not the steamboat taste is incomplete.

For me, it’s the pork liver and lettuce. Imagine pork liver being cooked just right, juicy!

And for the past few years, I’ve added another must have ingredients to the steamboat – fresh mushrooms! Enoki mushrooms, buna shimeji mushrooms and eryngii mushrooms (king oyster mushrooms)… etc. Just put them in the boiling soup and within seconds take it out and eat. Delicious!

Understanding, caring, protecting, showing care and concern but overdoing it and especially on the expense of others? Work, work and more work, all of a sudden, I just feel like giving everything up and take a break, a long break. Shiok!

This week I just purchased the Adobe CS4 - Education version. I must say, it’s very different from the previous version I was using. Most importantly, some features are getting dummy proof already, it really made image editing so easy.

I shall be spending some time exploring the new features this weekend.

Under Applications, Office, Barcode scanner. Guess what? I had been under the impression  - barcode scanner, so it’s supposed to scan barcode, right? And I’ve been trying to scan barcode since day 1 but always not successful. It was only till end of last year (after the phone warranty expired, meaning one year later), then I “saw” the icon.

I’m actually quite surprise that until now, I’ve not been a user for banking matter as long as I do not have a feel of the hard cold cash. Online purchase, online bill payment, booking of tickets, online check-in…have done that except internet banking, fund transfer…

Do you see a common point in them? I am able to control the final stage before deduction from my bank account and that is - signing of the cheque.

I understand all the convenience of e-banking but I am just not so keen when having to part my money by “virtual” means.

After looking at the phones in the market, finally decided on one. Honestly, it’s not as easy as I thought it would be.

So which phone did I buy? SE J120.
Simple phone but there’s really lots of room for improvement, eg the keypad. But ok for a cheap phone.

$200+ SPA voucher at far east plaza. 4D3N travel voucher to HK valid for 18 months. Last but not least, a stainless steel watch from Italy.

All I need to do is visit their recently opened office.

Told them I will consider then went to Google, did a search… one word that associated with the company’s name – timeshare…

They called up not less than 10 times and finally I answered and politely told them they better find someone to give the gift to, not free.

The end. They were not pushy, or asked questions. Maybe they were also fed up calling me already.

It has been a fruitful year. One of my accomplishments would be able to visit 3 countries this year considering the fact that I am not an avid traveler. Easily satisfied eh?

Good news, bad news, time to leave them behind and start afresh!

I enjoyed going through those free catalogs – supermarket, sports good, electronic gadgets, telco stuff etc. as they provide me with some insights of the lifestyle. For my last trip, I even got one on property. I don’t keep them; just read when I’m back in Singapore then throw away. Yes additional weight on my luggage but felt that it’s worth it. odd eh?

How are Sydney’s one different from Singapore’s eg Carrefour, singtel…? Quite a number of their catalogs are in booklet form, not just one piece of A4 or A3 paper. You might even mistake some as magazines.

The first call was last week, however I had forgotten that I was supposed to be “mr lim” so when the guy over the phone asked for mr lim, I said wrong number. It was only when that guy asked did you do a survey recently then I realized my mistake. But managed to bluff my way through that mr lim overseas but he left his phone with me, please call back another day…

This afternoon, received the call again (had saved the number in my contact list and named it survey – mr lim, to prep myself ). However wrong timing, I was having work discussion with my colleague and cannot excuse myself.

Will they call again? I want to know what prizes I won.

Been using N95-8gb for 1 year already, in between have also tried out some other nokia models, however it was only recently that I have finally grasped the full function of the pencil button.

I knew the pencil button can be used for copy and paste and that’s what I’ve been using it for. But now I found out that it can be used to mark selected messages, files, photos too… real slow, took me 12 months to realize.

do you know there are people who do believe in such messages? AND they really click on the link and in turn pass on such messages to other people without realizing what they have done.

So far some of the contacts have personal message such as “Do Not Click on any Links I sent…” but there are more who just take things lightly and when you inform them they will say “it’s ok, my antivirus did not detect any virus” “aiyah, just close the window lor”

Price plan is not a deciding factor since all the 3 telcos have similar ones. Price of phone, not really since there’s no one phone that is like saying to me “Get me!”

So what’s next? Customer service? Reception? Value added services?

Currently I only know the Red one is out. So it’s either Orange or Green.

Was wondering when it will be a norm for hotels to provide free wifi access, but I think it’s also one way for hotels to make money. Trying to post some pictures but as you know, it’s not my computer so not that easy.

Time now is 7.43 am and in Singapore 4.43 am!

Anyway took (only) 2 videos using the phone, think that one I have no complaints about the quality of the videos. Good and clear. Moreover the 8gb is much more than the various 2 gb SD cards I brought.

But you just got to hand it to the China people to come up with such clone phones.

No idea about Wifi or TV tuner, but I do like the touch screen and dual sim card feature though. As for the camera, 1.3 MP only? Must be joking.

Digital camera – been charging it daily since day 2 even though I had an extra battery.

Mp3 player - one AA size battery lasted till yesterday, been using it on the plane, accompanying me to sleep. Not bad.

K800i – did not bring the charger and the phone did not need any charging till I’m back in Singapore. Not that the phone lasted that long, but I only turned it twice a day – once in the morning and once at night to make some calls.

N95 8gb - charged it once in the hotel. Did not manage to get the sim card, as you know, troublesome, need to register etc… so been using it in offline mode.

At the shopping centres, newspaper, kept noticing - N96 preorder…

As for iphone 3G, read this review in the newspaper – supposed to be “Twice as fast. Half the price” right? but in india, it will most likely be “Twice the price. Half as fast”.
 
Did not recognize the phone models (vodafone…) people there carried, except found that quite a number of them prefer clam shell design.More of my india trip later.

I think life without my phone should be ok except got to get use to the inconvenience caused.

I’ve switched off my phones over the weekend before so no one is able to contact me.

But if it’s going to be a long term thing, I will

- not be able to take pictures,

- have to get an alarm clock,

- have to buy phonecard

- have to keep some 10 cents coins

- have to get a phonebook

- have to get a sudoku book

I will still survive but an eight year habit is not easy to quit.

too used to an on/off button thus had a hard time figuring out how to turn this phone off.

There are just teenagers around who kept insisting of breaking the rules and some just did it too openly. Also found out that majority of them used their phone for alarm clock (me too actually).

Their alarm were all songs. Thus early in the morning you can hear a symphony of songs coming out from somewhere in the office…

where is Sony Ericsson’s C905? they always come up with the features then wait and wait for the launch while other competitors got it out on the market first. Their SEX phone too.

And also till now no news on N96…

Interest fading…or is the wait supposed to make me more interested in getting the phone?

I off mine because I do not want to be disturbed at night.

There’s the silent mode but I still prefer the phone to be off (can save battery too!)

Now here comes the irritating part, friends who sent you sms at night.

They expect you to reply immediately or they will ask you why it took so long for you to reply.

I normally off my phone before I sleep (so it’s around 10 pm till 1am) thus any messages received will be the next day when the phone is on again. So any replies will definitely be late.

For SE phones, there’s even a Replied part where it will show the date and time I replied the message.

Tired of all explaining, just showed it to whoever “demand” an explanation and if they still do not understand… don’t give a damn.

Life without my phone has been terrible. I have been unable to contact my friends, or arrange sessions with my tuition teacher. Also, when I go out, my parents are unable to contact me in case of an emergency and have forced me to take my brother’s phone with me when I go out. My brother is beginning to get angry so I hope I can have my phone back.

After the initial problem with the program, I gave it another try.

Now it seems better though loading still takes time.

You can select which channel to watch but do note that you won’t be able to do anything, example every time I took a screenshot, the program will stop and to play it again means taking time loading it.

Other than slow loading at times, and no sound, not a bad program to pass time.

Besides the free channels, there’re some other offerings but need $$.

hmm, no one swimming yet.

Screen is wide (just rotate it),

and there’s no need to slide open the keypad, so if you do it right, no one will know you are not paying attention. Ain’t it great?

Ok, back to purpose of this post, actually it’s somehow linked to my previous one.

Was taking pictures, mostly using my ixus with no support. My night shots sucks

Somehow I just wanted some pictures that are clear and not blurry. Took out my N95-8gb, and happy shooting. I would not say it’s really good but at least it’s clear. However there’s a problem! No flash photography allowed! Thus I was caught off guard when the flash fired off. You know the problem rt? Same for my friend who was using the E71, every time the camera was reactivated, must remember to turn off the flash. One more thing, not wanting to sound like a bad record, the shutter sound luckily, I’m not the only one. There were quite a number of people using Nokia camera phones and ka cha ka cha…… One ka cha maybe embarrassing, but if many – the norm.

Which one would you use?

One that has a loud shutter tone or one with shutter sound that can be silenced?

One that remembers your settings or one that you have to set every time you used it?

One with common data cable or one with proprietary connection?

Tough choice, maybe there’s really no such thing as best of both world.

so you can see, the colours was a bit dull but it’s normal for the first few shots using nokia phones. I don’t know but that seems to be so after using E90 to N95-8gb. Need to take few more before the colors are ok.

For me, long long ago, I don’t because there’s not much data, or zero data to transfer. Then came along T610, finally there’s a need as I have to transfer the photos taken. It was infrared, then Bluetooth. Not in favor of using the data cable because SE phones are famous for their loose ports. However the day came and I had to use the data cable, yes, transfer rate is sure faster BUT loose connection is a real headache! I had to use one hand to secure the cable to the phone and the other hand doing the necessary on the PC.

There are people who prefer the proprietary connection but not me. It is so irritating when I found out that my k800i data cable is now cracked and anytime now, going to say bye bye.

Now, using N95-8gb, no such problem, I do not even need to worry about which usb cable I’m using. The mini usb cable I am using now is not even the one that came with the phone. The convenience of it, I loved it.

1. Screen slightly small (ok, once again I’m comparing with N95-8gb, if compared with SE k800i, E71’s screen is definitely bigger)

2. why not a standard earphone jack? maybe the size?

3. the red on/off button. seems out of place with the metallic look of the phone.

4. will the rubber cap that’s used to cover the usb port be loose and broken off after prolong usage? Especially people like me who will do some data transfer daily. Do you know what happened to my SE usb cable? No? ok will write about it later.

5. ?

As you can see, all the “faults” that I can find of this phone are so superficial that I felt I’m writing this post just for the sake of writing it.

Finally I surrendered and realized to capture a picture using the auto focus, one needs to press the T key. What a funny moment.

The way the keys are positioned to me is a plus point because those commonly used one when emailing can all be found in the main area.

Tried using it to connect to company mail but can’t, so only managed to tried out gmail. Hotmail… tried using the windows live that came with the phone but took some time, so just cancel the process.

By the way, I enjoyed listening to the mails downloaded, especially those spam mails

Honestly, this is one phone I do not mind getting one for myself.

One of the new features for N78 is the FM Transmitter. Was wondering why this particular feature in a phone. Nevertheless tried it out, not bad, I can receive the signal clearly on my other phones compared to one transmitter I purchased few years back. I tried changing to another frequency, one that’s presently in used.

One can still receive the signals though the radio station’s signal is stronger. You need to be near to the receiver before the signal can be overridden.

Ok, maybe I’ve found a way to use it - to disrupt listeners of radio stations.
btw loudspeaker will not be able to turn on when transmitter was activated. The transmitter is good for sharing music but bad if the owner and friends are not responsible enough. Imagine previously it was only one person blasting songs on the loudspeaker, now everyone in the group just need to tune in to the frequency and turn on their loudspeaker.
On the other hand, if they just listen via earphone, that will be great!

Nokia’s Internet Radio application was already available for N95-8gb to download, but was too lazy to install. Since it is in N78, I sure did some testing on it. One thing to note was that using the Internet Radio sure sucked the juice out of the phone real fast. Wow, after playing for less than 30 min, the battery indicator just went down and down.

Station directory you can search by genre, language, country and also the Top stations.

One way to preserve the battery yet wanted to use the Internet Radio might be using lower settings.

I tried the internet radio in the afternoon on different days. Buffering was real fast on the first try. Subsequent tries find myself kept getting time out message. Most likely it’s the internet problem.

Just move your mouse over the photos to see which phone was used.

Comparing with the SE K800i which I am using presently, the colours on k800i is more natural. N78 is slightly too saturated for my liking.

Camera shutter sound still cannot be off and it is still as loud as ever.

In terms of speed activating the camera, did a non scientific test on k800i, n95-8gb and n78, I tried to see which is the fastest - press the dedicated camera button to activate the camera (for k800i, slide the lens cover and also tried the shutter button). For N78 it’s quite responsive, seems it is slightly faster than n95-8gb by a second or so.

The Navi Wheel is an improved one from N81. Now the wheel can be used in majority part of the phone menus and lists. Just move your fingers round and round the rim of the wheel. Nifty feature but I find myself using the up down left right and the number pad to scroll through menu more often than the wheel.

Oh you can only turn on and off the Navi Wheel and not control the sensitivity of it. Maybe that’s why I still prefer the “traditional” way of scrolling - up down left right.

At first glance, the number pad seems difficult and uncomfortable to use. However after using it, it seems quite ok. No error in typing alphabets/numbers.

Main gripe will be the C button that’s at the far right of the phone. Not user friendly for right handed people, especially if you try to press the C button using your thumb. Thumb cramp!

Another problem I faced was the multimedia key, kept activating it when I tried to press the right selection key. Blame it on my big thumb. And also when using the Navi wheel, when trying to scroll through the menu using up down left right, kept pressing select instead. Yes, my thumb again. In the end rather than using my whole thumb, I used the tip of the thumb to scroll and the flesh of the thumb to select.

One more small problem, the call key (green button) was supposed to be able to check call list but in the phone I tried, it kept activating the messaging instead, which happen to be linked to the left selection key.

As the phone comes with FP2, thus there is this transition when switching between programs. Quite cool but mainly cosmetic only.

Finally, the whole phone looks good except for i) creaky back  cover and ii) the blue color back cover

Do you know today is 端午节 (Dumpling Festival? Dragonboat Festival? Duanwu Festival? I really do not know what is the proper name for it in English.) Have you had your dumpling?

Would I get one for myself?? No, not because it is not a good phone but I want something more (especially after N95 8gb, I do not see myself getting something less J) and N78 does not really suit my needs.

Would I introduce this phone to others? Yes. This phone is quite thin and light and had some important features packed in example, wifi, 3.5G. Actually a few of my friends had seen the phone and they like it except a little thing or two.

Just went for a short Penang trip to supposedly recharge myself.

This is the first time I’ve went overseas with a wifi phone and I must say it’s a good equipment to bring along.

The hotel I stayed in had broadband access in their rooms but that requires the normal connection. They had wireless broadband access in their lobby and that’s where I tested my phone N95-8gb.

Connecting to the network was a breeze unlike local hotels where you need to have an id and password.

I managed to surf the net to get local news, check email and most importantly complete the internet check-in (actually it was done by the hotel computer but I found out I could have done it using my phone as well). not ad not bad.

As for nokia, any touch screen offering? (I’m not talking about prototype) Actually it would be great if N95 8gb can be touch screen, the size is just right.

I’m tempted to get one, if the features are right (good camera!!, big screen, wifi, 3.5G…)

I’ve already been surfing on the phone using the normal sim card but that’s mainly for small amount of data transfer such as checking arrival time of buses J, one main reason was cost. Though the cost is only $0.0107/kb, in 10kb blocks, but once you go online, one will not really know what’s being downloaded.

That’s why I like the unlimited data plan.

 Actually ever since I gotten the unlimited data plan, have been using it everywhere, anytime. Will write more about it when I’m back.

The “trend” previously was mostly Nokias, then once a while you will have a pda phone popping up and I would be wondering “are they that busy?” Then it’s been more SE. Apparently SE had managed to capture the teenagers market with their W-series walkman phones, and not just one specific model but a range from the low end model to the high end.

Nokia XpressMusic is making its appearance now, but SE W-series is still way ahead in terms of numbers. Ask one to show you his/her phone, high chance it will be a walkman phone. It will be interesting to know why.

What happened?

To cut the long story short, my n95 8gb is now for surfing purposes as I’ve put the data sim card inside instead.

Having 3 sim cards is really a hassle. Now waiting for contract to end and do some reshuffling.

How I wish the phone support dual sim…

There’s supposed to be this program ShutUp where with a flip of the phone will silence any incoming call. However, Samir was busy with another program, Nokmote, so work for ShutUp is still in progress.

This is where other players come into the scene, a similar program had surfaced recently - Flip Silent. It’s now in version 1.02

Have not tried it yet but it would sure be nice to be able to turn off the alarm every morning just by a flip of phone but once again, program looks interesting and also while the novelty last.

When I had SE T610, personalizing theme was not just a simple change of wall paper and be done with it. You can do more than that. Slowly more and more phones allow user to change how the phone looks, even down to the icons and fonts used.

I downloaded my SE themes from various sites and sometimes I make my own using pictures I like. Since being new to Nokia, so far I have been using those ready made by other users and preferably those using the default icons.

Personally felt it’s better and neater in E90 as it will show up as a line under the active standby applications rather that a popup display in N81 8gb.

Also if you happened to EXIT that display, you will see only a message icon below the battery indicator but not missed call.

However if you go to the main menu you will see both the missed call and message icon (besides the battery indicator).

Weird.

Hope a future firmware can follow how E90 display such info.

Personally felt that the Navi scroll key is kinda wasted here as the use of it is restricted to very limited areas of the phone. Why can’t it be implemented throughout the phone? Like in menu, contacts, messages…

N81 8gb came with a microUSB instead of miniUSB. I understand that microUSB will replace miniUSB in many devices to come but for now, miniUSB is still the convenient choice and moreover N81 8gb is not that special or thinly built to warrant the microUSB. Ok there’s never a good time to change to the new standard so ignore my blabbing here.

Last but not least, why oh why only 2MP camera?

Smsing using one thumb is a pleasant experience due to keypad layout. It’s even more comfortable compared with the N95 8gb especially the last row *0#. Not forgetting that the keypad slides out smoothly and readily.

The screen is built-in similar to n95 8gb, not recessed like other phones.

The menu button and c button are placed at the bottom left and bottom right of the phone but they are very accessible, maybe it’s because they are positioned right at the corner.

The 3.5mm jack makes it listening to music easier, just plug in your favorite earphone and off you go.

As for the battery, each charge lasted me around 3 days – playing games and listening to approximately 2 hours of music daily.

1. Volume control – have you ever experience increasing the volume one node and found it too loud, decreasing it one node too soft? This phone happened to fall into this category. If only the volume can be increase in smaller steps. I would also prefer to see numbers for the volume rather than the volume slope.

2. Fast forward/Rewind mode -  press and hold will ffwd or rewind within a song but press and release will find yourself listening to the next song. It would be good if the mode can be further personalized or refine, allowing the user to play next song or just ffwd within the song. Also the player tried to display the remaining time and play time all on the same line and thus part of the file duration got truncated (2:50:.. rather than the full 2:50:30), thus cannot see how many seconds you are ffwding or rewinding.

3. Resume – no resume mode for mp3. If you happened to press stop, then play again, you will have to listen to the song from the beginning. So you just have to press pause and do not switch off the phone. As one who listen to long recordings, this can be a nuisance. Does that mean the phone does not allow resume play? No. It does – in podcast. Your mp3 genre must be podcast before the phone will put it in the podcast folder. And I got to say in podcast mode (if you call that that) I’m impressed with this phone as it’s even better than my mp3 player. You can stop a file, exit the player, off the phone, upload new files into the phone, play a new file….. play back that file again, the player will resume from where you left off. I really appreciate that!
(btw, the player will play the first file from the beginning if one deletes a file in the podcast folder)
If in podcast can do it? Why not in normal mp3 playing? Since they’re all mp3.

4. a sleep mode will be good because I like to sleep with music.

that’s all for my few cents worth of thoughts.

The phone is real solid, the price does match the build quality. Battery life is acceptable (3-4 days per charge). As usual, the open keypad for communicator is

convenient for typing, the big screen is useful when surfing the net and reading mails/messages. Not to mention that Nokia had managed to shave off some size and weight off compared to E90’s predecessor.

This is the first Nokia phone that I used and thus got to relearn the various phone functions. Luckily the learning curve was not as steep as I had thought. It takes time but it’s not that difficult.

I had not experienced any restart or phone hanging even though I had stressed it at times – installing new software, removing the softwares, turn on camera switch to and fro camera-video mode, open various programs and letting them run in the background etc. So that’s a big plus to this phone.

Though the phone had quite a number of features but I had only used the common ones – Wifi, GPS, camera, media player, phone call, messaging, alarm.

Wifi
Wifi was stable when I connected it to the wireless@sg network, surfing was smooth and fast.

GPS
Had some problem detecting the satellite signal but still managed to get it done eventually even though was told that the new firmware will make the connection easier.

Camera
At first I thought the camera quality is not up to standard even though it’s stated 3.2MP and it’s a business phone. I was wrong. Found out it’s a ll about lighting. It is important, much more important than the other camera handphones that I had used. Once you got that part right, the picture quality is good.

Media player
A normal basic player. Nothing much to complain here. However I must mention that the speaker sound quality is good! Personally felt that it’s much better than SE k800i. I had tried playing a song in the school hall, placing the phone on the stage and I can hear the song clearly when standing ¾ the length of the hall away. Beyond that, the sound just became muffled.

This is a good phone to own but would I buy this phone? Not really. It’s just not me, and if I get one, I felt that the phone would be wasted on me. And as someone who used a phone more for the camera than making calls, this phone is on the longish side.

Would I recommend others to get this phone? Yes, if you are a business user which the communicator is designed for.

Some recommendations:
A touch screen for the internal display, a 3.5 mm earphone jack will be good.

so it’s now bye bye E90, hello N81…

PS: pardon my language as I’m just typing what comes to my mind.

This is how the predictive T9 input works in SE phone:

“When texting, the predictive text engine, T9, pops up a small window with a choice of words or symbols by default. Choosing a new word requires the use of the small joystick instead of the * key.”

When I was using the E90, I had to press the * key to scroll through the whole list of possible words to get the one I want. I did not get to see which word is next on the list, just blindly scroll through and sometimes got to click “previous”…</P

Found a software that can do something similar to SE way of smsing.

Imagine you typing the word “environment”, instead of typing out the whole word (36847666368), you just need to type “en” (36), the program will show a list of possible words starting off with “en”, to make the list shorter, you just add a “v” and the list will show words starting with “env”.

Good right?

Not actually because you can only choose using the program or the original input. If you select the programme, you cannot use the T9 input, meaning typing “e” you have to press 3 two times, “s” means press “7” four times. You have to make a choice to use the program input or the default input. If only they can combine both, that would be just great!

This version that I downloaded and tried doesn’t seem to work with the open keypad even though it stated the programme supported it. I went back to use the usual T9 input.

There’re some other similar programs doing the same thing. Have yet to try them all.

Once again It’s actually quite subjective but for this test, I’m glad that I had found C quality is the better of the four and C is N95-8gb. Why? Because I just bought one.

In the afternoon, at City Hall area, decided to try the GPS again. This time also open sky but with buildings like capitol building around me, managed to get only one signal.

Today went out with my friend who got the N95. He was telling me how the GPS pinpointed his location in P. Ubin, how fast and easy to get connected…

I got him to help me start the GPS on E90, just in case I had done something wrong previously.
Results: E90 - no signal; N95, 5 satellites detected.

Finally E90 detected one satellite signal but the signal was not consistent, switched between no signal or 1 satellite, I need four or more of the satellites!
N95 had 5 satellites signals throughout.

The phones were placed side by side but the number of satellites detected was very different.

In the end, gave up but I finally managed to see how GPS work on N95.

Will try it out again another time.

one question i asked after reading was “What’s wrong with Motorola?”

I have a digital camera and a camera phone. Each got its own use. Camera phone is more for a spur of a moment shot. I carry my phone everywhere so all I need to do is just to whip out the phone and start taking pictures. If I had to go get my digital camera, many memorable moments would have been forever lost. Majority of those candid shots were taken by camera phone because you just do not know when it will happen.

Unless you are one of those who carry the digital camera with you all the time, you can’t deny the fact that a camera phone is an invaluable gadget to have as it captures that particular moment. I for one am really appreciate this technology.

Some of the impromptu shots I had taken using SE camera phone… sorry candid shots of my friends are not here.

so you can see, the camera feature of the phone to me is important and for E90, except for the beginning few shots, the rest were clear and sharp (refer to the showcase for those pictures taken using E90). I’m not fussy about be it SE or Nokia or whatever brand as long as the image quality is good, the images produced are naturally colored and pleasing to the eye.

my wishlist for camera features in nokia phone will be

1. shutter sound can be off
2. the phone can be activated faster
3. the phone can remember the user settings and not reset to default after exit
4. one can totally switch off the AF light (is that what you called that?)
5. the switch between video and camera mode can be faster
6. camera can be activated by pressing the camera button (E90 can’t but i believe the N series can).

Do you think there will be a firmware for all of the above? I certainly hope so

The difference between my previous SE phone and Nokia way of sms storage:

SE (comparing k800i)
Total in inbox + sent + … = 1000. The phone will prompt you when it is reaching the limit, asking you to delete some messages to free up spaces.

Nokia (E90)
Total in inbox… dunno yet, since now it’s ever increasing. But Sent item will only store the last 20 messages.

Each got its pro and con. Amount of messages that can be stored definitely the bigger the better. Personally I prefer SE way of storing the messages. Reason? I received one late reply and I forgot what I had sent earlier; however the sent box can’t provide much clue since the previous message was overwritten, so in the end got to reply to that message asking what’s it about.

I like the search function and the sorting function in E90 (imagine got to search through 1000+ messages for that particular one…).

Now the speed is back to normal.
This is one exporter I found. The programme is simple to use except it just export all the messages and not able to select which one to export.

When I was using k750i, somehow the camera cover got a slight dent, and i only got it for a few hours. just got to tell myself it’s unique….

Between normal pouch, silicon case and crystal casing, I personally prefer the crystal one though I know some of my friends hate it. It’s just a matter of preference. To me pouch is too troublesome, silicon casing the feel is not there, too rubbery, crystal one still can see the color of the phone, and it protects where it should protect.

Saw the recent MF, their screen protector seems to have expanded to cover the back of the phone, camera lenses… not bad, I might go back to that brand for my next phone.

Backside? I afraid that I might crack the phone or it will fall off. Using E90 I had this fear of breaking it into half whenever I squat or bend over due to the length, but it did not happen.

Waist? So far only used the E90 pouch once and put it on my waist because went to D&D and did not carry my barang barang. It’s just not my type.

Yes for a few times but after one incident I now got to think twice doing that. Was walking with E90 in my hand, waiting for a sms reply. Walk walk walk, then all of a sudden the phone nearly flew off my grip, luckily the phone was long enough or my reaction was quick enough, managed to catch it before any damage was done…

what are their impressions of the phone then since none of them had used the communicator before?

1. big, heavy, but all agreed that the phone is solid and quite nice to put it near to the ear because of the size.
2. as casual users, a number had expressed their disappointment that there’re no smileys.
3. they like the opened keypad and impressed with the features of the phone. (actually who doesn’t?)

one of my friend was getting a new phone and dunno what to get until i showed him the E90. he’s a samsung user and the turning point was when i showed him the wifi and he did a “live” post to his blog with the E90. he was impressed with the connectivity and how convenient it is, however E90 was a tad too expensive for him, in the end, he got himself a N95.

the pictures were getting better as i now have a better gauge of the camera.
how come?

surprisingly for this E90, lighting condition is very important (which camera doesn’t?), but it’s too important. it does not like full light. indoor shots were quite good, colors rich but outdoor shots especially under the sun is still a trial and error thing. colors can still look washout but if there’s some shade (using hand) the pictures do look colorful as what it should be. but this is still not 100% fool proof way to take good pictures.

if only the camera can also remember the settings, was shooting in close-up mode, switched to vivid color, sunny white balance, however when switched to auto mode, all other settings changed back to the default mode which can be quite irritating.

until now i’m having some problems getting used to the keypad because kept getting mixed up the space key and caps key. ha ha ha!

luckily there’s the keypad, open the communicator and type which is much faster and i really like that. though i miss the words suggestion feature in SE phone, that makes typing real fast.

another funny thing happened to me when using my first nokia phone, was while making calls. i select the contact,press call, then put phone to ear but wait and wait how come not connected, then realised got to select video call or voice call. stupid thing is i still did it

When I got hold of the E90, I was like “hmm, not as thick as I had thought.”

It’s nice to touch and the built is solid except for some parts (near the speaker) that creaks.

The first time I brought the phone out, the only thing I felt was not it’s weight but it’s length. Was concious trying to make sure it won’t slip out of my pocket.

However holding the phone to make phone call felt good because of the length, just nice.

Have no problems with the phone features, so far it had not hang on me.

I’ve been a SE user so there are some re-learning to be done especially the sms part.

Shutter Sound
The shutter sound cannot be off which is a big turn off for me, not to mention it’s loud too. I know it’s to prevent perverts from taking pictures. Tried to take some shots of birds but they got scared off

Camera Settings
If you change the settings, say to close up shot, flash off, take a pic and exit the camera. When you activate the camera again, it will be back to default setting. It just doesn’t remember your setting. Sometimes I accidently exit the camera and got to change all these settings just to take the next shot.

Picture Quality
The photos when viewed on PC monitor also looked washed out.
and most of them had this problem, only a number of them got the right saturation and hue.

Maybe it’s my skill but so far the pics I am satisfied that was taken by E90 are:

Once again, E90 is not a phone for its camera. It does not get it right everytime. However the phone’s other features are good if not excellent but that is for my next post.

Let’s talk about the camera, overall would consider the performance as average. The 3.2MP is like overrated because doesn’t looked like one. I got to remind myself E90 is a communicator.

When i looked at the screen (viewfinder), i suspected the camera quality will not be as good as k800i. The colors are just not there. Generally the colors looked slightly wash out, especially those taken under the sun.

Activating the Camera
you have to go to menu, Media, camera to activate it.
If not , set a shortcut which was what i did.
If only can use the camera by just pressing the camera button.
There is a lag when you activate the camera. Switching between video and still camera is also slow.

Camera Button
the camera button is not sensitive too. You press halfway down to get into focus and all the way down to take the picture but I got lost a few times, no matter how hard I press it just won’t take the picture unless I re-focus again.

Autofocus
Pressing the camera button half way down will focus the object but the focussing time was a bit too long for my liking, it kept focus, out of focus then focus again becoming green. You cannot take the picture unless it get focused. Missed out quite a number of kodak moments.

I choose phones not for their design but for the features. A mobile phone to me is not just for calling anymore. Even though I have a digital camera but I used the camera on my phone more as it’s very convenient and so far my phone was used to take pictures more than it was used to make calls. So if I’m buying a phone, photo taking feature is top.

The phones I had: M35i, T100, T610, K700i, K750i and K800i. Now I got to try out my first Nokia…
